Shaquille O’Neal tells LeBron James what Michael Jordan told him – NBA Special Report

Shaquille O' Neal aka the Big Shaq has struck again.

He was speaking at his massive retirement party at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas and when asked if he had something to say that could help LeBron James through his period of strife Shaq replied in the negative.

However “The Diesel” did drop a one liner he picked up from arguably the greatest player to ever set foot on a basketball court, Michael Jordan,

“Experience is the best teacher,” he said, adding, “Michael (Jordan) told me ‘You must fall before you can stand.’ ”

That is a philosophy known only too well to Shaquille O’Neal and of course to Michael Jordan. When Jordan started out the league was dominated by the Larry Bird led Boston Celtics and the Magic Johnson led Los Angeles Lakers.

There was also the matter of the “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons, who defeated Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in the playoffs three years in a row before Michael swept them on his way to the first of six NBA World Championships.

Every great player struggles and now its LeBron’s turn.

Shaquille O’Neal played with LeBron James for a year in the Cleveland Cavaliers side that lost out to the Boston Celtics in the playoffs. Shaq had gone to the Cavaliers that season and declared that he was there to “win a ring for the king”, a reference to LeBron’s nick name “King James”.

However, when the LeBron and the Cavs lost to Boston in the playoffs, the project at Cleveland fell apart. LeBron left the team under uneasy circumstances, citing his desire to win an NBA World Championship as the main reason.

LeBron joined the Miami Heat and formed the Big Three which consisted of himself, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The Heat looked strong in the post season and cruised past teams such as the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls, who had MVP Derrick Rose on their team. However, the Heat fell on the last hurdle when they lost in the NBA Finals to Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks.

Since then LeBron has faced the harshest criticism from analysts around the world for his no-show at the Finals. The Heat bashers have also out in force to gloat to LeBron about leaving Cleveland and still falling short.

Shaquille O’Neal also needed to leave his first team, the Orlando Magic and join the Los Angeles Lakers to get NBA World Championship he so craved. Even then he had to wait a few years as Kobe Bryant matured into a player that could help him reach that goal.

The diesel has delivered the words of wisdom and now is to be seen whether LeBron James learns his lessons from the adversity he currently faces and comes out better for it.

Lakers Roster Review: Kobe Bryant

Age: 32

NBA Experience: 14 years

Contract Status: Signed thru 2013-14

2010-11 Averages: 25.3ppg, 5.1rpg, 4.7apg, 45% FG, 32% 3PT, 82% FT

By Kobe standards the 2010-11 season was a failure. You won’t find any real statistical evidence to support that statement. Aside from his minutes per game dipping to the lowest they’ve been since he was a 6th man, Bryant’s stats were consistent with what we’ve come to expect from Mamba.

However when it comes to Kobe anything short of winning an NBA title is considered failure.

This might have been the most difficult season for Bryant to endure from a basketball standpoint. He finally had a summer of rest after maintaining one of the most hectic schedules in the history of hoops over the course of the last five years. Problem was it wasn’t a summer of rest for Bryant so much as it was a summer of recovery. Doctor’s orders prohibited KB24 from engaging in any activity thanks to knee surgery.

Early in the preseason it was evident that this was going to be an uphill battle for the game’s best player. Kobe struggled to get into game shape, playing limited minutes while hardly participating in practice.

All things being considered, that Bryant was till able to play in all 82 regular season games while maintain his career averages despite fewer minutes is a testament to both his talents and work ethic. Having said all of that there is no denying the fact that the wear and tear of almost a decade and half of NBA service is taking its toll on Kobe.

Many have been quick to author the demise of Bryant but they’re only looking at the glass as half empty.

No arguing there are health concerns going forward for Kobe. But we’re talking about one of greatest competitors the sports world has ever seen. What makes Bryant a true legend is that his game always evolves relative to what the needs of his team are. I’d bet the house on seeing a much different Kobe come the start of next season…whenever that might happen.

While we may never see the Mamba that torched the league back in ’06 we definitely haven’t seen the last of his days of dominance. So long as Kobe is on the roster I like the chances of the Lakers being title contenders.

What was I remembered from kindergarten? I took away very recently, all the time was sad because all the parents come in 17, and my mom after work at 19. I was taken to the House of Pioneers of our district, where I was playing checkers. It saves me from an afternoon nap, instead of which I went to play checkers. I was a young hopeful, according to my coach.

And the saddest memory of that time, as I have one tooth was ill and I was sent to the dental clinic, where I had to snatch it. I had four doctors and a fifth with forceps, seriously . I remember, and I broke away and then come have some stronger man ... then I'm up to 20 years did not go to the dentist at all.

Every summer, I went to a village in Tver, spent time with grandparents. I have been bitten by dogs. I also milked, milked as well .. I was young .. helped, at my own strength. I went mushroom-picking in the past. Now, unfortunately, I haven’t time for mushroom-picking. But fishing - not for me, I do not understand fun in waiting ...

School years.

My dad took me on the SDUSHOR " Smena ", then I was 7 years old. I was living on Vasilevsky Island, and the second class began to go through the whole city is in the " Smena ".

We went played abroad then I was10 years old, it was unforgettable. We won ... ... a lot of impressions. We traveled during the month. I remember the temple ... can not remember exactly city’s name, may be Florence or Torino, there is a lot of steps, more than 300 to the upper observation deck ... it seems like we have in St. Isaac's. And there we gave a lot of things, I came with one bag, and went almost seven.

When my mother for the first time sent me to the camp to the south, after the first grade. The first time I was flying on a plane, for me it was very interesting and amusing. I spent three months in a camp in Evpatoria. And then, every summer I went to training camps with the team. It was better.

I was 10 years old, then my parents divorced, and I lived without a father, but my mother never hindered our communication. Despite the fact that I often came to him, that he lived in another place, I was certainly frustrated. My mother said that their relationship - is one thing, and the relations between father and his son - is quite another. The grandmother of my father's line helped us, I really love her. She is a very wise woman, and her word is very valuable for me.
