Back in 2007, David Nalbandian and his fierce, world-class backhand absolutely destroyed Rafael Nadal in their first two matches. Both came in the fall on the speedy indoor hardcourts of Madrid and Bercy. Nalbandian won the back-to-back matches 6-4, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2.
Nadal turned his fortunes at the 2009 Indian Wells Masters event. Nalbandian nearly posted another win over the Spaniard, but Nadal fought his way back for the win. Nadal won another 3-set match in Miami last year.
Nalbandian is not the player he once was. His backhand is still a huge weapon, but he donates far too many errors and his footwork has become slightly lackadaisical. Look for Nadal to exploit the athleticism weaknesses in the Argentine’s game.
